We were 17 strong representing Kansas at the recent MARC Conference. We had a great time expanding our knowledge, raising funds for the MARC Foundation Scholarships, donating items to Project Harmony Child Protective Center, raising money for Ways and Means, and seeing longtime friends and making new ones!

We had many leadership seminars, but the one that hit home to our KS members was by Karen E. Pribnow who spoke on Breast Cancer Awareness and Nurse Navigator. Karen has been an oncology nurse for almost 30 years and in 2013 obtained her certification in breast navigation. This program benefits those affected with breast cancer, at the beginning and all through treatment and beyond. The Navigator is an advocate, a confidant, an educator, and mostly a friend to those with breast cancer. This cancer has touched so many of our friends and family members, and was especially timely with our two Gamma Omicron sisters who were recently diagnosed – Brenda Shaffer and Debbie Smith.

Also on Friday evening the basket auction was held to benefit Ways & Means. They held our two baskets until the end, and it was so exciting. The “left overs” from what could not fit into the basket you saw at the last meeting was placed in a cute dog bed. It brought in $100. Then the grand finale was our Pawsitively Beautiful basket full of dog items which brought in $500!! I was so excited during the biding that I almost stood up and cheered, but thought better of it because I didn’t want to bring it home. But I was so proud of all of you from Kansas who donated these items in August! It was a huge, wonderful donation of love for puppies everywhere! The person who won the basket is from Missouri – Sherry Krupka, and she was thrilled with her purchase. She was keeping some of the items and donating the rest to a shelter in her area. Kansas brought in $600 of the $1,600 raised for Ways and Means.

Friday evening we had a special treat as the Dancing Grannies entertained us with their wonderful skills. Who would have known they were all over 65 with the oldest around 83 years young! Then on Saturday night Marla Teegerstrom entertained us with laughter and song.
Angie took part in the Flag ceremony representing Kansas Another popular fundraiser was the Cork and Beverage Fundraiser for the MARC Scholarships. $1,010.00 was raised with 149 donated bottles, and so many people were thrilled with their new beverages. I’m not sure how many bottles made it home because everyone was really happy throughout the conference. |
Congratulations to Pat Ludwig and her board for a wonderfully successful year, and best wishes to Kim Mandrell and her board in the upcoming year!
